  1. What about The Toronto Iron Works at 629 Eastern Av? I grew up on Pape Av. I found a picture on the internet of Mary’s variety a store thats been there for years. They were a family from Yugaslavia and they took it over around 1969. Before that it was owned by the most beautiful kindly elderly lady we all knew as Mrs Allen. The store was known as “Mrs Allens.” It was a short jaunt from our house on Pape Ave to Mrs Allens and I was often sent there for bread and milk and my mom and dad’s cigarettes. They smoked “Mark Ten” a brand thats long gone ( thank God) and Mrs Allen would marvel at how fast I coulds say largemark10filerkingsize. She would laugh and laugh everytime and get me to say it over and over. I was about 9 years old when I learned Mrs Allen had left and Mary took over. I never got a chance to say good-bye to her but she’s been in my memory all these years and will always remain there. There was also a store joined to hers that I will speak about later if you will allow me. thanks Ken Dacey
